List of Canadian Orders and Decorations

This list contains the official orders and decorations of Canada . The Canadian labeling system is based on the British model , but took a different development after 1967 (100th anniversary of the founding of the state and introduction of the Order of Canada ). All awards are given on behalf of the Canadian monarch , represented by the Governor General of Canada . In addition to the awards from the state, there are also those from the provinces .

Order of the state

Orders at the federal level are awarded by the monarch or the governor general. The medal winners are entitled to use abbreviations after their name that indicate their status (post-nominal letters) .

1. Order of Canada (Ordre du Canada)
2. Order of Military Merit (Ordre du mérite militaire)
3. Order of Merit of the Police Forces (Ordre du mérite des corps policiers)
4. Royal Victorian Order (Ordre royal de Victoria) - without the top two classes
5. Order of Saint John (Ordre de Saint-Jean) - with a different class system

Order of the Provinces

Each of the ten Canadian provinces introduced their own orders after 1967. They are all one class, with the exception of the three class order of the Province of Québec . They are awarded to people who have attracted attention in the respective provinces through special achievements. The respective lieutenant governor makes the award .
