The Rentals is an American alternative rock band that has existed since 1995.

Band history

The group was formed by Matt Sharp , bassist for the rock band Weezer , and Patrick Wilson (drums), also by Weezer, Rod Cervera (guitar), Tom Grimley (keyboards), Petra Haden (violin, vocals) and Cherielynn Westrich (vocals). Their debut album Return of the Rentals was at 1995 Warner Bros. released. The single Friends of P. , taken from the album, reached number 7 on the Modern Rock Tracks . In the spring of 1996, the group toured the US and Europe as the opening act for Blur and other artists.

After some changes in the line-up, u. a. with Jim Richards (keyboards) and Kevin March (drums), the second album Seven Moore Minutes was released in 1999 . It includes the song My Head Is in the Sun , written by Sharp and Rivers Cuomo , as well as cameos by Damon Albarn and Donna Mathews. After a Japan tour following the release, the band members turned to solo projects.

In 2005 the Rentals finally returned and toured with a new line-up, including Ben Pringle from Nerf Herder on the synthesizers. In August 2007 the EP The Last Little Life EP was released on the Boompa label , and the download single Colorado at the end of 2008 . In 2009 the band released a total of three EPs, including Joey Santiago from the Pixies .

In 2014 the third Rentals album Lost was released in Alphaville . For the first time they were also represented in the official US album charts . In the summer of 2015, a tour with a new line-up through the USA followed. At the beginning of October 2017, The Rentals released the single Elon Musk Is Making Me Sad , which is dedicated to internet entrepreneur Elon Musk and was created from a collaboration between Sharp, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Gentle Assassins . A new album has also been announced.
