biography
Matt Sharp was born in Bangkok in 1969 to American parents. He grew up in Arlington , Virginia from the age of one. As a teenager he was a fan of hardcore bands like Suicidal Tendencies or DRI ; at 16 he moved to California .
In 1989 he met Rivers Cuomo , Jason Cropper and Patrick Wilson, with whom he lived in a shared apartment for a time. In early 1992 they founded the band Weezer, which combined elements from classic metal ( Kiss ) and pop ( Beach Boys ). Sharp was the group's bassist, who was also involved as a chorus singer and songwriter on the first two Weezer albums, Weezer and Pinkerton . Songs by the group like Buddy Holly or Say It Ain't So became worldwide hits.
In 1995 Sharp founded the band The Rentals, with whom he released the album Return of the Rentals in the same year the band was founded . In 1997, Sharp separated from Weezer in order to be able to concentrate fully on his new group. Sharp played the soundtrack for the film Meet the Deedles in 1998 . After the second Rentals album Seven More Minutes and a few tours, the band retired in 1999.
In 2002 Sharp sued his former bandmates. He accused them of having withheld royalties for the song Undone - The Sweater Song as well as numerous pieces from the Pinkerton album , which were created with his participation. One could agree out of court.
Sharp then lived in Tennessee and began working on his own songs. In 2003 he released the EP Puckett's Versus the Country Boy and in 2004 the album Matt Sharp . He also cooperated with the bands Tegan and Sara and Goldenboy. In 2004, Sharp and Cuomo stood for the first time again for a joint appearance at California State University .
From 2007 the Rentals released new songs with a new line-up. In 2014 the second The Rentals album Lost was released in Alphaville .
