Pièce de resistance

As pièce de résistance ( / pjɛs də re zi stɑ̃s / , French , actually "piece that offers resistance", in the sense of solid, heavy food) is the main course in the classic menu sequence , usually a piece of meat such as roast or poultry . Another name is big pièce .

In a figurative sense, pièce de résistance is also used in the sense of “core, heart, main thing” or for an outstanding achievement (comparable to the “masterpiece” or “figurehead”); in addition, Meyer's Großes Konversations-Lexikon from 1911 also had a derogatory connotation, namely “esp. for a bombastic, boring editorial. ”The current Duden refers to the word as out of date.

In Swiss Standard German , on the other hand, it has the meaning of "hard chunk, difficult problem."
