Sullivan's Cove
Sullivan's Cove (formerly spelled Sullivan's Cove ) was founded as a convict colony and is now a district of Hobart in Tasmania , which lies on the Derwent River and borders the city center of Hobart. On February 21, 1804, Sullivan's Cove was founded by later Lieutenant Governor David Collins as Tasmania's second convict colony after he had dissolved the Risdon Cove convict colony .
history
Tasmania was settled a year earlier by the British John Bowen with a convict at Risdon Cove. David Collins was supposed to found a settlement on the Tamar River near Port Dalrymple on the north coast of Van Diemens Land with free settlers and convicts from Port Phillip . This place didn't meet his expectations, so he sailed as far as Risdon Cove. In Bowen's absence, he gave up this settlement because he also considered it unsuitable and sailed on to a bay, which he selected as the settlement area of a penal colony.
The bay was named after John Sullivan, a British Secretary of State, in August 1804. From this settlement the later Tasmanian capital Hobart developed, which was named after Lord Robert Hobart .
The Royal Hobart Hospital was founded there in 1820 and can now accommodate 600 beds.
today
The former convict colony of Sullivan's Cove developed into what is now Hobart's harbor area, which is home to numerous historic and modern buildings. Today the bay is a place that is visited by numerous tourists.
In what is now Sullivan's Cove , you'll find the University of Tasmania School of Art , the Town Hall and the Maritime Museum .
In 2006 there was an international competition to design the waterfront line of the port, in which numerous international and national architects took part.
