Ortolph Fomann the Elder also: Ortholphus Fomannus (born January 23, 1560 in Schleusingen , † May 19, 1634 in Jena ) was a German philosopher and legal scholar.

Life

Ortholph was the son of the pastor, dean and chief inspector of the Princely Hennebergisches Gymnasium in Schleusingen Jacob Fomann (* 1533 in Erfurt; † September 27, 1589 in Schleusingen) and Margaretha Steude (* November 9, 1539 in Erfurt; † October 9, 1615 in Schleusingen), the daughter of the former Magdeburg pastor and later Erfurt pastor Sebastian Steude. After receiving his first training at home, he attended high school in Schleusingen. In 1580 he moved to the University of Jena, where on January 23, 1582 he acquired the degree of master's degree. After giving lectures in Jena, he became adjunct of the philosophical faculty in 1588 and professor of philosophy in 1589, which was connected with the inspection of the electoral scholarship holders in Jena.

Fomann received his doctorate in law on October 20, 1595 in Jena and was admitted to the Faculty of Law on May 21, 1599. In connection with this he received a position as assessor at the Saxon court and in 1619 at the Schöppenstuhl in Jena. Fomann was 1607 senior of the law faculty and on August 25, 1619 first professor of the law faculty. He was also an assessor at the ecclesiastical consistory, as well as the Count of Schwarzburg and Russian councilors. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Jena Salana. He was dean of the law faculty three times and in the summer semesters 1595, 1606, 1616 and 1626 rector of the alma mater . He died as a result of a broken rib, and his body was buried on May 23, 1634 in the Jena Collegiate Church , where an epitaph was also erected.

His writings deal with donations, intestate inheritance, marriage, feudal law, servitute, the rights of the count palatine, etc. His handbook of feudal law was leading for decades.
