location

The 55.2 hectare nature reserve is located southwest of Gammertingen between Neufra and Hettingen, it ends shortly before the confluence of the Fehla and the Lauchert . The Fehlatal lies in the natural area 095- Middle surface Alb in the natural spatial main unit 09- Swabian Alb . It is also part of the 1658 hectare FFH area No. 7821341 areas around the Lauchert valley .

Protection purpose

Beaver dam in nature reserve (2015)

Above all, the conservation area should preserve the scenic and quiet meadow valley of the Fehla, which meanders along a stretch of eight kilometers, still completely unevenly . This undisturbed living space between wooded valley slopes is to be preserved in its entirety. On the humus-rich and lime-rich alluvial soil in the valley floor, alluvial meadows spread out in their typical sequence: from the river to the valley slopes, there are successively flood lawns, wet meadows, fresh meadows, semi-dry lawns and finally the forest edges at the foot of the slope. The fact that there is still no house or road over a distance of seven kilometers makes the valley with its species-rich flora something special.

If you look closely, you can still see old ditch systems from the 19th century. With the help of these ditches and small locks ( water traps), the meadows were irrigated in the past - as in most Alb valleys. In this way, the farmers not only kept their fodder meadows lush even in dry seasons, but also fertilized the grass with the nutrients that the water carried with it. Keeping this simple irrigation system working took some effort; the trenches had to be cleaned regularly. In the mid-1960s, the last farmers gave up this work in the Fehlatal. The preservation and restoration of this historical water meadow economy is of national cultural importance.

Partner protected areas
