The Mühlebach area was a nature reserve (NSG number 4.258) in the southwest of the Baden-Württemberg community of Ostrach in the district of Sigmaringen in Germany, which was designated by ordinance of April 20, 1995 by the Tübingen regional council . It rose on January 9, 2017 in the Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried nature reserve .

location

The approximately 28 hectare large nature reserve Mühlebach owned natural area for Upper Swabian hills . It was 5.6 kilometers southwest of the center of Ostrach, between the suburbs of Waldbeuren and Ulzhausen , at an average altitude of 635  m above sea level. NN , south of the county road 8272.

It was essentially a swamped spring slope on a northeast-facing flank of the outer young moraine . The springs come to light through impermeable molasse layers and, especially in the north-western part of the protected area, carry water that is quite calcareous.

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose was the preservation of the high-quality wetland with its rushes and sedge reeds, reeds and tall perennials, wet meadows and near-natural softwood stocks as a habitat for a strongly endangered animal and plant world as well as ensuring the tertiary outcrop as a geological monument and the Mühlebach as a cultural and historical monument. In addition, the existing orchards, the hardwood forests and the abandoned gravel pit are to be protected.

The protection purpose was also the ecological improvement of the area through suitable care and design measures.

Partner protected areas

The Mühlebach nature reserve bordered the FFH area “ Pfrunger Ried und Seen bei Illmensee ” (8122342) and was part of the “ Pfrunger und Burgweiler Riedbird sanctuary (8022-401).

Flora and fauna

So far, 204 plant species have been identified in the Mühlebach site, ten of them are considered threatened with extinction in Baden-Württemberg and nine are in need of conservation. Six of these species are protected by law. The floristic rarities include a number of orchid species , the round-leaved sundew , the fever clover and various sour grasses .

Surname

The protected area got its name from the Mühlebach running parallel to the slope, an artificial body of water that was created to power a mill in Waldbeuren. The stream is fed by the diversion of a spring near Ulzhausen and by other hillside springs in its catchment area.
