location
The approximately 28 hectare large nature reserve Blochinger Ried is one natural area to the Danube Ablach plates . It is located about five and a half kilometers northeast of the city center of Mengen, in a hollow on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb , in the Blochingen district , at an average altitude of 588 m above sea level. NN
description
The trough was formed almost 200,000 years ago during the Riss glaciation , when a gully was probably formed here in front of a tongue of the Rhine glacier. After the glacier melted, a wet area was left in the poorly drained area, which gradually silted up .
Today, in the Blochinger Ried, the moored watershed runs between the Soppenbach , which drains to the east, and the Kalten Brunnen, which drains to the west. The abundant slope water that escapes from a molasse ridge in the south, high rainfall and seepage from the agricultural areas in the area still ensure that the protected area is very wet. As in most other moors, attempts were also made here to gain use from the area by cutting peat or draining it. These unsuccessful efforts have been abandoned, but the original vegetation has largely fallen victim to secondary vegetation, which has been heavily influenced by human interference. Essentially, this is a relatively species-poor Kleinseggenried . In the area of the former peat cuttings, streams and ditches, however, one can also find a diverse range of wetland flora.
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose is the preservation of the diverse wetland biotope in its capacity as an important element of the biotope network system.
Partner protected areas
The Blochinger Ried nature reserve is part of both the FFH area “ Danube between Riedlingen and Sigmaringen ” (7922342) and of the “ Upper Danube Nature Park ”.
