Gottschalk (Gosche) von Ahlefeldt (* 1475 ; † January 23, 1541 at Gut Bollingstedt ) was the last Catholic bishop of Schleswig .

Life

Gottschalk von Ahlefeldt was the son of Claus von Ahlefeldt and was born in 1475. After studying he became Doctor decretorum ( Canon Law ) in Rostock and in 1497 Canonicus and Thesaurarius . He then went to Italy to continue his studies and stayed in Rome for some time . In 1498 Gottschalk was enrolled at the University of Bologna and returned to Schleswig in 1501 as a doctor of canon law .

Due to his education in Bologna and his descent from the noble family Ahlefeldt , he got a job as chancellor at the court of Duke Friedrich I. In 1506 Gottschalk von Ahlefeldt took over the cathedral provostry at Schleswig Cathedral and on January 26th 1507 he succeeded Detlev von Pogwisch as bishop of Schleswig elected. In him one suspects "the intellectual head behind the works of Hans Brüggemann ".

The Reformation began in his day . Since he did not oppose the Reformation, he remained in possession of the episcopal property until his death on his estate Bollingstedt on January 23, 1541. Tilemann von Hussen was appointed the first Protestant bishop of Schleswig after Johannes Bugenhagen had refused this office .
