James D. Thornton

James D. Thornton (born January 23, 1953 in New Rockford / North Dakota ) is an American euphonium player, music teacher and composer.

Thornton, like his five siblings, received his first music lessons in the band of his father Donald Thornton , who was a bank manager in Dickinson. He first played the cornet, later also the tuba and euphonium. From 1974 to 1981 he was a member of the United States Marine Band in Washington, DC, with which he appeared in front of four American presidents and made annual tours of the United States. As a soloist on tuba, trombone and euphonium, he often played his own compositions and arrangements.

From 1981 he studied at the University of Mary in Bismarck / North Dakota, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a master's degree in the following year. From 1988 to 1992 he gave instrumental lessons at Hazen Public Schools , after which he was director of the bands at Minot State University until 2000 . He has also been teaching at the Summer School of the Fine Arts at the International Music Camp in the International Peace Garden since 1983 .
