Jürg Frischknecht (1988)

Jürg Frischknecht (born January 23, 1947 in Herisau ; † July 18, 2016 in Zurich ) was a Swiss journalist and author of numerous non-fiction books.

Life

Frischknecht grew up as the youngest child of a family of teachers in the rural canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden . He attended the canton school in St. Gallen and began to be politically active at an early age, first in the Appenzell Forum for Political Enterprises , and was one of those who submitted the first initiative to introduce women's suffrage in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

From 1967 to 1974, Jürg Frischknecht studied sociology , journalism and history at the University of Zurich , began his journalistic activities at the same time and then worked for ten years as a Zurich correspondent for the Basler National-Zeitung . In terms of content, he mainly dealt with university issues, media development and political extremism . In 1981 he was also one of the founders of the left-independent Zurich weekly WoZ , where he exposed police spies in the youth movement and criticized nuclear power plants .

Frischknecht worked as a freelance journalist, lecturer and author in Zurich. He died in July 2016 at the age of 69 after developing cancer.

In 1976, Frischknecht was one of the group that spectacularly penetrated the secret archive of Ernst Cincera and reported on it in a “Democratic Manifesto”. With Cincera he also dealt as a co-author of the book The uncanny Patriots: Political reaction in Switzerland .

Other publications by Frischknecht are the book "The interrupted trace" (Zurich 1983), written together with the filmmaker Mathias Knauer , about anti-fascist emigration in Switzerland from 1933 to 1945 and "Switzerland, we are coming" (Zurich 1991) about those in the 80s Years ago , new right-wing and racist groups emerged in Switzerland. Together with Peter Niggli, Frischknecht published the follow-up work to the “Unheimlichen Patrioten”: “Right-wing rope teams. How the 'scary patriots' mastered the collapse of communism ”(Zurich 1998).

Together with Ursula Bauer and the photographer Marco Volken, he has written a series of hiking guides since 1995, each of which deals with historical topics along the hiking trails. The following were published by Rotpunktverlag:

Awards

In 1994 Frischknecht received the Fischhof Prize , which is awarded by the Foundation against Racism and Anti-Semitism (GRA) and the Society for Minorities in Switzerland (GMS) and in 2004, together with Ursula Bauer, the Binding Prize for nature and environmental protection (due to his commitment for Alpine ecology and Alpine politics). In 2006, together with Ursula Bauer, he received the Albert Mountain Award for a new type of hiking book, the hiking book.
