Crocker Land is the name of a suspected eighth continent in the Arctic Ocean , the existence of which has been refuted.

history

In 1906, the American polar explorer Robert Peary stated that he had seen a land mass on the horizon on an expedition from Cape Thomas Hubbard. He named the land mass after George Crocker, a member of the Peary Arctic Club . Peary guessed that the land should be about 130 miles (210 kilometers) north of the coast of Ellesmere Island at coordinates 83 degrees north and 100 degrees west .

In 1913 the so-called Crocker Land Expedition started , which was led by the American explorer Donald MacMillan (1874-1970). It ended in disaster when the ship froze in the pack ice and was eventually crushed. Few of the crew survived and were not rescued until four years later.

Satellite images have shown that the continent does not exist. It is now believed that Peary was fooled by a mirage .
