Nicolás León

Nicolás León (born December 6, 1859 in Quiroga , † January 23, 1929 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican medic , archaeologist , anthropologist and ethnologist .

León studied medicine at the Colegio de San Nicolás in Morelia until 1883 . In 1885 he became professor of pathology here . In 1886 he founded the Museo de Michoacán , whose director he became. In this capacity, he devoted himself to research into the archeology and history of Mexico and the indigenous population, as well as natural history studies, and published more than thirty scientific papers in the museum's annals.

In 1891 he was commissioned to build the Museo Oaxaqueño . From 1893 he taught natural sciences at the Escuela Normal para Profesores of Oaxaca , from the following year he also worked at the Escuela Nacional de Agricultura in San Jacinto .

In 1899 he joined the Instituto Bibliográfico , where he developed the Bibliografía Mexicana del Siglo XVIII . From 1900 to 1909 and from 1911 to 1925 he worked at the Museo Nacional de México . In 1914 he became a member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina , which he headed from 1921 as Vice President and from 1922 as President.

León published almost 350 of his own works on anthropology, ethnography and ethnology, linguistics, archeology, history and bibliography, as well as numerous translations and edited over a hundred writings by other authors.
