The Museo Nacional de Antropología (MNA) in Mexico City , in German National Museum of Anthropology , is a museum of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia , in which the pre-Columbian past and the living Indian culture of Mexico are exhibited. The built-up area comprises 44,000 m², which is supplemented by 35,700 m² of open space.

The museum in Chapultepec Park was planned by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez , Jorge Campuzano and Rafael Mijares in 1963. It consists of a central patio with a connection to 23 exhibition halls. The exhibition area is 79700 square meters. In the center of the patio there is an impressive reinforced concrete-aluminum construction (umbrella) of 54 by 82 meters and a height of 16.80 meters.

history

The museum, designed by architects Pedro Ramírez Vázquez , Rafael Mijares Alcérreca and Jorge Campuzano, opened on September 17, 1964 after a construction period of 18 months. The collection itself was created on March 18, 1825 as a university collection, with parts going back to the collection of Lorenzo Boturini de Benaducci . This boturini collection was created between 1735 and 1743 and is the earliest important collection on the history of Mexico.

On the ground floor and partly outdoors, the Indian cultures and epochs of Mexico are presented through an archaeological collection and architectural examples. The most famous and most important exhibit is the Stone of the Sun (Piedra del Sol). The ethnographic halls are located on the upper floor. The current Indian peoples of Mexico with their traditional costumes and examples of their craftsmanship and architecture are exhibited here.
