Pedro Ramírez Vázquez
Pedro Ramírez Vázquez (born April 16, 1919 in Mexico City ; † April 16, 2013 there ) was a Mexican architect and designer . He is considered the founder of modern Mexican architecture and was President of the Organizing Committee for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.
Life
Pedro Ramírez Vázquez studied architecture at the National School of Architecture of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) until 1943. Between 1955 and 1957, fifteen markets were built in Mexico City, which he worked with architects Rafael Mijares Alcérreca and Juan José Díaz Infante Núñez and designed by Javier Echeverría . From 1958 to 1964 he was chairman of the Comité Administrador del Programa Federal de Construcción de Escuelas (CAPFCE), and Ramírez Vázquez was president of the organizing committee of the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City .
In 1967 he was one of the founders of the Academia de Artes and "numbered member" (Miembro de Número) of the Academia de Artes, a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (SNCA) and the International Academy of Architecture (IAA).
He was the founder and first rector of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and from 1976 to 1982 secretary of the Secretario de Asentamientos Humanos y Obras Públicas .
Works
His most famous work is the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City , consecrated in 1974 . In his home country he also designed a. a .:

- the Estadio de Futbol Azteca (1966)
- the Torre de Tlatelolco in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas (completed in 1970)

- the seat of the Mexican parliament, the Congreso de la Unión (1980)
- the municipal theater "José Manuel Maldonado Maldonado" in Piedras Negras (2010)
He also created numerous important buildings in several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, including many museums, as well as u. a .:
- the residence of the President of Costa Rica in San José (1976)
- the monument to Antonio de Montesinos (1480–1540) in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic, with the statue of Antonio Castellanos Basich (1982)
- the Centro Latinoamericano y del Caribe of the University of the West Indies in Kingston , Jamaica (1994)
