The Museo Nacional de Antropología Dr. David J. Guzmán ( MUNA for short ) is a national museum of the country of El Salvador and one of the oldest museums in the capital San Salvador .

history

The museum was founded in 1883 during the tenure of President Rafael Zaldívar . Its founder and first director was the natural scientist and archaeologist David Joaquín Guzmán . The first location of the museum was in a building belonging to the Universidad Nacional before it moved to the Villa España in 1902 and was classified as a Museum of Science, Industry and Agriculture.

In 1927 the museum moved into a former military hospital. In 1942, under the direction of Adalberto Julio Rivera, it was moved to its current location. By legislative decree of 1945, the museum was renamed the David J. Guzman National Museum in honor of the founder .

The museum building was so badly damaged in the earthquake of October 10, 1986 that it had to be demolished. In 1999 construction began on Avenida Revolución and it was reopened in 2001. It is in close proximity to the International Center for Trade Fairs and Congresses (CIFCO - Centro Internacional de Ferias y Convenciones ).

Exhibitions

Today the MUNA presents the history , settlement, agriculture, handicrafts, trade as well as trade, religion, art and forms of communication of El Salvador in five permanent exhibitions .

In addition to the exhibition rooms, there is a hall for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium and a library .
