Rafael Zaldívar y Lazo (* 1834 in San Alejo ; † March 2, 1903 in Paris ) was President of El Salvador from May 1, 1876 to April 6, 1884 and from August 21, 1884 to May 14, 1885 .

He was Professor of Medicine and Vice-Rector of the University of El Salvador. In 1869 he was an authorized envoy in Prussia, where he negotiated the friendship, trade and shipping treaty between the German Customs Union and the Free State of Salvador . In 1870 he was the Minister of Public Procurement and Warfare at the time he was President of the National Assembly.

In 1876, after the war with Guatemala, he became interim president, which led to the final failure of his predecessor Andrés del Valle. In May 1876 he was elected president and shortly thereafter took office. The laws passed during his government from 1881 to 1882 repealed the legal person of the ejidos , which meant the expropriation of the lands of the indigenous communities without compensation . He made trips to the United States, Spain, Great Britain and France.

Together with Guatemala and Honduras, there was a proposal to create a Central American Republic when, in February 1885, the Guatemalan President Justo Rufino Barrios Auyón announced the forcible restoration of the Central American Confederation and declared himself military commander of the same.

This was not met with unanimous approval in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The El Salvador government opposed the Barrios claim and formed a defense alliance with Costa Rica and Nicaragua, which was approved by Mexican President Porfirio Díaz . Barrios occupied El Salvador in March 1885, while the forces of Costa Rica and Nicaragua put down the forces of Honduras. He died in the battle of Chalchuapa .

Shortly afterwards, on May 14, 1885, Rafael Zaldívar was deposed, had to leave the country and went into exile in France.
