Francisco Menéndez Valdivieso (born December 3, 1830 in Ahuachapán , El Salvador , † June 22, 1890 in San Salvador , El Salvador) was President of El Salvador from June 22, 1885 to June 22, 1890 .

Life

The Menéndez family belongs to the Agujero de oro . Menéndez was a member of the Partido Liberal since his youth . In 1860 he joined the army of El Salvador under the commander-in-chief Gerardo Barrios . In 1871 he was on the winning side of the fall of Francisco Dueñas Díaz, which was largely due to a war with Guatemala. In 1876 he initially supported the liberal government of Rafael Zaldívar , but he was able to avoid a conflict with the president by exile in Guatemala. In 1885 Menéndez led and overthrew a coup against Zaldívar and became president himself on June 22, 1885. As president, he had the constitution revised according to liberal principles. The constitution, enacted in 1886, was the eighth in the history of El Salvador and was in force from 1886 to 1939. In 1887 he was elected. During his reign he pushed coffee growing in the western part of El Salvador. On June 22, 1890, Menéndez gave a banquet on the fifth anniversary of his seizure of power in San Salvador by the army of El Salvador, when the inspector general of this army, Carlos Ezeta , came to San Salvador at the head of 600 soldiers and declared a revolt; Menéndez died the same day. He was either slain by his political opponents or died of a myocardial infarction .

By naming the municipality of San Francisco Menéndez in the Ahuachapán department , he was canonized by civil investiture .
