Ángel Guirola de la Cotera (born August 15, 1826 in Zacatecoluca , El Salvador , † April 27, 1910 in Santa Tecla , El Salvador) was President of El Salvador from April 6 to August 21, 1884 .

Life

His parents were Gertrudis de la Cotera y González and Rafael María Guírola. Ángel Guirola did an apprenticeship in Guatemala , as was common in the Central American bourgeoisie . In 1852 he was elected mayor of Ciudad San Vicente .

In April 1854 an earthquake caused great damage in San Salvador, whereupon the seat of government was moved to Cojutepeque and the founding of Nueva San Salvador, today's Santa Tecla , was decreed in the valley of Las Colinas . On April 13, 1859, Guirola married Cordelia Duke Alexander in New York , who was born in Kingston (Jamaica) in 1829 and died in Santa Tecla on January 3, 1920. The Duke banking family is part of the Agujero de oro . From 1866 Guirola was elected to parliament.

A son of Ángel Guirola was Adalberto Guirola, a West Point graduate , was killed on July 15, 1906 in a battle in Metapan. His parents named the Hogar Adalberto Guirola , an orphanage in Tecla, which they had founded after him . Other children of Ángel Guirola were Rafael Guirola, Ángel Guirola, Eduardo, Julia Guirola de Batres, Lulú Guirola and Matilde Guirola. He spent his old age in Santa Tecla, where he had a stately home built.
