Cojutepeque is a city in El Salvador .
The place is the capital of the department of Cuscatlán and has 50,315 inhabitants (2007).
Cojutepeque is one of the oldest cities of El Salvador, was the capital of the republic in the years 1832, 1834, 1839 and 1854 to 1858. On February 13, 2001, numerous buildings in the city were destroyed by a strong earthquake. The districts most affected were: San Jose, San Nicolas and El Calvario and the southern settlements.
