Willem Hendrik de Vriese

Willem Hendrik de Vriese (born August 11, 1806 in Oosterhout , † January 23, 1862 in Leiden ) was a Dutch doctor and botanist. His botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is " de Vriese ".

Life

Willem Hendrick was the son of the negotiator Gosewijn Willem Hendrik de Vriese (born November 6, 1752 in Delft, † January 28, 1812 in Breda) and his second wife, Angenieta Louisa Verspijck (born December 7, 1766 in Batavia, † April 12, 1846 in Naarden), born. In 1819 he went to the grammar school in Leiden, where his future father-in-law Frans Antonie Bosse was the rector. On September 6th, he enrolled as a medical student at Leiden University . During his studies he developed a special fondness for botany and in the second year of his studies he answered a question from the University of Groningen on the subject of Quid hactenus ex plantarum physiologia de forma directione, structura et quaedam functione radicum innotuerit . For this he received a gold medal and wrote the thesis botanical in the same year . de radicibus plantarum . On December 20, 1830, de Vriese received his doctorate in medicine on the subject of Specimen Medicum, quo praecipuae exponuntur methodi, quibus utitur Therapeutice naturalis, ad sanandos corpus humani morbos chronicos .

In January 1831 he went to Rotterdam , where he was employed at the clinical school there as a lecturer in natural history, botany and food science. He took on this task on February 7th, 1831 with the inaugural speech Over het verband tusschen de study of geneskunde en that of the naturalist wetenschappen . In 1834 he was appointed associate professor of botany at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam , which task he took up in November of that year with the speech de Progressu Physiologiae Plantarum, Prudenti Naturam indagandi Rationi Tribuendo . In 1842 he became a full professor there and in 1843 also took over the medical lectures. During his time there he also worked for the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam .

From 1834 to 1845 he edited the scientific journal Tijdschrift voor naturlyke Geschiedenis en Physiologie with Jan van der Hoeven and from 1846 with Francois Dozy (1807-1856) and Julian Hendrik Molkenboer (1816-1854) the Nederlandsch kruidkundig Archief . He was also a member of the editorial team of the botanical journal Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe published by Louis van Houtte .

As a descriptive botanist, he dedicated himself to the tropical flora of the Dutch colonies. He wrote treatises on cinchona trees , Rafflesia , Marattiaceae , the camphor tree and the cultivation of vanilla on Java. He has also appeared as editor of the writings of his teacher Kaspar Georg Karl Reinwardt and translator of several botanical works by foreign authors.

On July 15, 1845, he was appointed professor of chemistry, botany and natural history at the University of Leiden, which task he took on on September 27, 1845 with the introductory speech De re herbaria Batava non minus quam reliquis Europae populis incolenda . In connection with this he was given the management of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden . In 1857 he was sent by the government to the Dutch East Indies to carry out botanical studies on the plant cultures there in Jakarta on Java . For this purpose, he gave the farewell speech De involoed der kruidkunde op de belangen van den Staat and left on October 21, 1857. Within four years he visited Sri Lanka , the Moluccas , Borneo and Sumatra . He and his wife returned from this trip on March 2, 1861, in poor health. However, he began to give lectures again, which task he began with the speech Wetenschap en beschaving, de gronslagen der welvaart der landen en volken van den Indian Archipelago . After his wife had preceded him with death, he died about three quarters of a year later. His body was buried on February 12th in the Rapenburg cemetery.

Willem Hendrik met on December 28, 1831 in Leiden with Charlotte Theodora Antonia Bosse (born July 1, 1810 in Leiden; † May 11, 1861 in Leiden), the daughter of the high school director Frans Antonie Bosse (born September 14, 1775 in Middelburg; † December 23, 1839 in Amsterdam) and his wife Charlotte Theodora Schneither (* December 25, 1786; † October 16, 1860 in Leiden), married. From the children of this marriage we know:

Honors

In 1837 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . From 1838 de Vriese was a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , he became a member of the Association for the Flora of the Netherlands and its overseas possessions ( Dutch: Vereeniging voor de Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen ), the provincial Utrecht Society for Arts and Sciences ( Dutch Provinciaal Utrechts Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen ), member of the Society for the Benefit of the Commonwealth ( Dutch Maatschappij Tot Nut van't Algemeen ), member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden ( Dutch Maatschappij van Nederlandsche Letterkunde van Leiden ) and in 1842 he became a foreign member the Royal Horticultural Society in London. On July 21, 1855 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

The plant genus of the bromeliad family Vriesea was named after him by John Lindley . The genus Neovriesia Britton from the same family was named in his honor.
