He was baptized on the day of his birth in the Schottenkirche in Vienna . family

Giovanni Antonio Guardi was the eldest son of the northern Italian baroque painter Domenico Guardi (1678–1716) from Trentino and Maria Claudia Pichler from Neumarkt . His brothers were Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) and Nicolò Guardi , his sister Cecilia Guardi married Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770), who in 1756 became chairman of the academy.

Life

The family moved to Venice after the birth of Giovanni Antonio Guardi in Vienna . Here he took over his late father's studio in 1719. His two brothers also worked there. It was not until late, around 1750 that he was considered a vedute painter .

His customers included the collector and art connoisseur Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg , for whom Giovanni Antonio Guardi made numerous copies by other artists. He also commissioned him to produce several decorative paintings with Turkish motifs. Schulenburg received a total of 106 paintings from the Guardiwerkstatt

1750–54 Guardi painted the Tobias cycle in the church of Sant Angelo Raffaele in Venice (at the organ stand, can still be seen there).
