from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sobiesław I. (also Subisław , Polish Sobiesław I Gdański , Latin Sobieslaus ; * around 1130 - 23 January 1187 ) was the first historically tangible ruler of Pomerania from around 1155 in his function as Polish governor under the supreme command of the Senior Duke of Cracow . He was the founder of the Pomeranian dynasty of the Sobiesławids .

Life and political career

Depiction of Sobiesław I (kneeling) on an engraving (1749), which was made after a funeral monument to Sobiesław in the Oliva Monastery .

The first Duke known by name is depicted as the first in a series of Pomeranian princes in the monastery church of Oliva . These pictures are from a later time. The year 1180 has been inserted under his picture. Sobiesław married around 1150 with a sister of the Kujaw voivod Żyrosław from the Pował family who was not known by name . The documents of his successors show that he founded the Cistercian monastery Oliva around 1185 . The entry of the monks on July 2nd, 1186 was preceded by detailed negotiations with the sovereign to ensure the future prosperity of the monastery. In addition to the village of Oliva, the monks were given six other villages in the neighborhood, fishing rights near Putzig and in the Vistula delta , in the Fresh Lagoon and on the sea. The monks were allowed their own trading ships and they were supposed to build and operate several mills on the Strießbach near Langfuhr. The first monks in Oliva came from the Kolbatz monastery near Stettin , and German settlers also came to the country with them . At the same time, Sobiesław also donated St. Catherine's Church in Gdansk and died, according to a much later entry in the Oliva necrology , on January 23, 1187. Its historical existence had previously been questioned by research because of the uncertain sources . That is why it has become common in German historiography to regard his son Sambor as the progenitor of this family. In Polish historiography, this family is known as the “Dynastia Sobiesławiców” (Sobiesławid Dynasty) .

According to Goldbeck , Sobiesław founded the city of Nowe ( Neuchâtel i West Pr. ) In 1185 .

Sobiesław died in 1187. His eldest son Sambor I succeeded him in the governorship.

Marriage and offspring

Two sons known by name resulted from the marriage to a Polish woman who was not known by name:

  • Sambor I. (approx. 1150 - approx. 1207), Duke of Pomerania
  • Mestwin I (approx. 1160 - approx. 1219), Duke of Pomerania
