Today's Hennepin Avenue Bridge is the last in a series of bridges on Hennepin Avenue over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis , Minnesota and crosses Nicollet Island . Its official name is Father Louis Hennepin Bridge , in honor of the discoverer of Niagara Falls , the 17th century Belgian missionary Louis Hennepin , who also discovered the Saint Anthony Falls , which are a short stretch downstream. Three of the structures were suspension bridges , while the fourth, which lasted almost a century, was a steel arch bridge . The first bridge at this point was the toll bridge, opened on January 23, 1855, which is believed to be the first ever to span the Mississippi River. New buildings were opened to traffic in 1876, 1891 and most recently in 1990. The main span of today's bridge is 190 m. It is 316 m long, 41 m wide and has a clearance height of around 11 m. Six lanes of Hennepin Avenue, a major Minneapolis high street, cross the bridge .
