The Third Avenue Bridge , originally St. Anthony Falls Bridge is a landmark of downtown Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota . It leads the Minnesota State Route 65 at the upper steps of the Saint Anthony Falls over the Mississippi River .
The 667.6 m long arch bridge consists of five arches with a span of 64 m, two arches with a span of 41 meters, as well as fore bridges at both ends. It connects Third Avenue in central Minneapolis with Central Avenue on the north side of the river. The S-shaped route over the Mississippi is intended to avoid breaks in the limestone of the river bed, which could be caused by the weight of the piers.
The bridge was designed by Frederick W. Cappelen , City Engineer of Minneapolis, who also made plans for other similar bridges, such as B. for the Franklin Avenue Bridge . Construction began in 1917, and it will be opened to traffic a year later. The construction costs at that time were 690,000 US dollars .
The structure was later modified and given a general overhaul in 1979/1980. It is one of the Contributing Properties in the Saint Anthony Falls Historic District .
