At the age of 22 he founded SAB Severin Ahlmann Betonindustrie, a workshop with three employees, in 1946. In post-war Germany , many people kept rabbits and did not have suitable feed containers. Ahlmann recognized this and started producing feed bowls for rabbits. This was the beginning of his career and the foundation for the ACO company.

Severin Ahlmann developed the wheel / swivel loader in 1952 , which he made ready for series production. In the 1960s, his company was the first to mass-produce wheel loaders with power-controlled, hydrostatic drive.

He expanded his business areas to include building construction , civil engineering and building services as well as the wastewater treatment segment . Finally, the company expanded into the manufacture of cast iron and special stainless steel construction .

With the processing of drainage systems made of polymer concrete , new design options arose from 1972, which were mainly used in the construction of stadiums. In addition to developing systems for animal husbandry , Severin Ahlmann was very successful with products for the protection of species in amphibians .

Between 1981 and April 7, 2003, the childless Josef-Severin Ahlmann gradually gave almost the entire company shares to the son of his brother, Hans-Julius Ahlmann, who died at an early age, and handed over the management of the company to him. The nephew Hans-Julius Ahlmann continues the global expansion of the ACO Group. The ACO Group, headquartered in the “horse holding” in Büdelsdorf, was an employer for around 3,800 employees in 40 countries in the 2013 financial year.
