The museum in the dark

The Eisenkunstgussmuseum in Büdelsdorf is a trade museum located opposite the former industrial site of the Carlshütte , which is primarily dedicated to the cast iron and art casting of the 19th century and the history and cultural history associated with it.

Foundation, endowment

The foundation of the museum goes back to the entrepreneur Käte Ahlmann (1890–1963), who commissioned the building in 1961 to store her extensive collection of cast iron objects. Today the museum is part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation and a direct branch of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History Schloss Gottorf .

History of the house

On the occasion of her 70th birthday in December 1960, Käte Ahlmann initiated the construction of a museum to store a collection of cast iron and artificial castings that she had put together over many years - also with the help of Hans Schlothfeldt . At that time, she had been managing the Carlshütte ironworks for 30 years. The flat museum building around an inner courtyard was built by the Danish architect Carl Storgård from 1961, completed in 1963 after the donor's death and opened as a private museum. The property north of the Carlshütte, which bordered a small park with a monument to Marcus Hartwig Holler, was designated as the building site.

In 1981 the collection was acquired by the state of Schleswig-Holstein . The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district took over the museum building and grounds in the same year. From then on, the museum was managed as a branch of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History. Since April 1, 2010, the museum has been sponsored by the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation at Gottorf Castle.

Käte Ahlmann's son, Josef-Severin Ahlmann , who died in 2006 , bequeathed his private fortune to the Iron Art Museum, which was used to finance the renovation of the building from 2011 to 2016 and the redesign of the permanent exhibition.

The museum has a comprehensive collection of cast iron objects from the Renaissance to the present from Europe and Asia. One focus of the collection is the Carlshütte products. There are also cast-iron objects from well-known smelters such as Sayn , Ilsenburg and Gleiwitz , as well as leading figures for iron art casting, such as Karl Friedrich Schinkel , Johan Conrad Geiß or Leonhard Posch .

Around 200 objects from the collection are shown in the permanent exhibition.
