The Austrian sculptor Leonhard Posch revolutionized the art of iron casting in the field of portrait medallions with his extraordinary and extremely fresh, sensitive and realistic models. Posch came to Berlin in 1803 at the instigation of Johann Gottfried Schadow and until his death created more than 200 portrait models, which were primarily intended for the royal iron foundry in Berlin and for the Gleiwitzer Hütte . The demand for contemporary portraits was enormous. In addition to members of the royal houses, successful military, philosophers and artists, Religiosa were very popular at the time. In 1815 the Sayner hut near Neuwied am Rhein came into the possession of Prussia. In 1816 Posch became a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts . A year later, an art foundry was set up in Neuwied and the management of the model chamber was transferred to the civil servant draftsman Karl Osterwald. In the Sayner Hütte, Heinrich Zumpft, from Berlin, was afforded its own modeller, but Posch's models also came to the Rhineland through the mediation of the central metallurgical authority. After all, the Sayner inventory in 1846 comprised 1,165 cast models. In 1865 Krupp bought the hut.
