Stein Widar Rønning (born May 28, 1965 in Tau , Strand municipality , Norway ; † January 23, 2008 in Stavanger ) was a Norwegian karateka .

Together with his two brothers, he began playing karate as a teenager in 1978 . In the early 1980s, the coach of the Norwegian national team, Martin Burkhalter, noticed him and began to promote him. At the age of 20, Rønning became European champion in Oslo . Since then he has been successful in numerous other competitions. In addition to two other European Championship titles (1988, 1993), he won the 1989 World Games in Karlsruhe in his discipline . A year later he reached the peak of his career by winning the title at the WKF Karate World Cup in 1990 in Mexico City .

During his active career, Rønning began to work as a trainer in Stavanger and in his home town of Tau . He was known for attaching great importance to the traditional ethical values ​​of his sport, which he also passed on as an instructor.

Rønning died in January 2008 after a serious illness in the University Hospital in Stavanger.
