Johann Christian Joseph (born January 23, 1700 in Sulzbach ; † July 20, 1733 in Sulzbach) was Count Palatine Duke of Pfalz-Sulzbach and Margrave of Bergen op Zoom .

Life

The second son of Count Palatine Theodor Eustach von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1659–1732) and Princess Eleonore Maria Amalia von Hessen-Rheinfels (1675–1720) and brother of Joseph Karl von Pfalz-Sulzbach and Abbess Franziska Christine von Pfalz-Sulzbach came from one Branch line of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken family , which had been directly eligible for the Palatinate electoral dignity since 1685 .

After the accession to the throne of the Palatinate Elector Karl Philipp from that Neuburg line, the end of this branch of the family became apparent. Neither Karl Philipp nor one of his many brothers had produced a legitimate male heir who could have assumed the electoral inheritance. It was already clear by 1716 that the dukes of Sulzbach would inherit the Palatinate electoral dignity. Johann Christian succeeded his older brother Joseph Karl von Pfalz-Sulzbach . The succession to the throne was out of reach until his brother died in 1729 without a male heir and he became the Hereditary Prince of the Electoral Palatinate . However, he died before the Elector of the Palatinate, and his son entered into the line of succession. In 1732 he succeeded his father in Pfalz-Sulzbach, but died the following year.

Marriages and offspring

Johann Christian married Princess Marie Anne Henriëtte Leopoldine de La Tour d'Auvergne (1708–1728), great niece of the French Marshal Turenne , in 1722 . They had two children:

  • Karl Theodor (1724–1799), Elector Palatinate since 1742
  • Maria Anna Luise Henriette (* / † 1728)

After the death of his first wife in 1728, he married his second cousin Princess Eleonore von Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg (1712-1759). The marriage remained childless.
