José Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo (born January 23, 1946 in Managua ) was President of Nicaragua from 1997 to 2002 .

After studying law , he worked as a lawyer until 1979. After the Sandinista seizure of power , he spent six months in prison as he was associated with the Somoza regime. From 1990 to 1995 he was mayor of the capital Managua and from January 10, 1997 to January 10, 2002, President of the country.

In December 2003, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for misappropriating US $ 10 million in government funds. So far, thanks to his immunity , he has not had to serve this sentence. Instead, he is under house arrest. Some of his assets held in bank accounts in Panama and the United States have been frozen. Even so, he continues to play an important role in the country's politics.
