Don Walsh (born November 2, 1931 ) is an American oceanographer .

On January 23, 1960 he explored the Mariana Trench as a first lieutenant in the United States Navy with Jacques Piccard . The Bathyscaph " Trieste " brought on 10,911 m depth ( Triestetief - originally measured 10,916 m, the value was corrected later). This was a deep diving record until April 28, 2019.

Walsh spent more than 30 years exploring the seas. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1954, he entered active naval service, which he left with the rank of sea ​​captain . As a former dean of the marine program and professor of ocean engineering at the University of Southern California , Walsh founded an underwater repair company, Soyuz Marine Service, as part of a joint venture with the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology , which is still active in the Russian Federation today.

Walsh is the namesake for the Walsh Spur , a mountain ridge in the Antarctic.
