Hugo Achugar

Hugo Achugar (born January 23, 1944 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan writer, literary essayist and lecturer.

Life

Achugar successfully completed his training at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas (IPA) in 1969 . The following year he received a grant from the French government. In 1980 he earned a Ph.D. in Latin American literature from the University of Pittsburgh . He then taught Latin American literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Education (FHCE) of the Universidad de la República (UdelaR). From 1975 to 1983 he worked at various Venezuelan universities. Achugar, who also worked as a visiting professor in Brazil and Spain, then held a teaching position in the USA at Northwestern University between 1983 and 1990 . In 1994 he received another scholarship from the Catédra Simón Bolívar at the USP in Brazil. He also conducted research at the Fundación Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos (Celarg). From 1999 to 2003 he was Director of the Cultural Policy Program of the Rockefeller Foundation at the Center for Interdisciplinary Latin American Studies at the Universidad de la República . Achugar teaches at the University of Miami . Currently (as of 2012) he is the National Director of Culture (Director Nacional de Cultura) in Uruguay.

In addition to numerous works of poetry and essays, Achugar also wrote two novels, which he published under the heteronym Juana Caballero . Achugar has received numerous awards for his literary works. In 1996 he received the Premio Bartolomé Hidalgo for La biblioteca en ruinas , but was also honored with prizes from the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC), the Feria Nacional de Libros y Grabados and the Intendencia Municipal of Montevideo .
