George McManus

George McManus (born January 23, 1884 in St. Louis , Missouri , † October 22, 1954 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American cartoonist and comic artist. He became known through the comic strip Bringing Up Father .

life and work

McManus, the son of Irish immigrants, dropped out of school at the age of 15 and worked for the daily Saint Louis Republic , which also published his first comic book, Alma and Oliver . In 1904 he moved to New York and worked there for New York World , for which he drew various sequel stories. From 1912 McManus drew for the newspaper The New York American , which had poached him. His greatest success was the daily strip Bringing Up Father , which he drew from 1913 until his death in 1954 and whose main male character he played in some real-life films. This comic about a newly rich Irish immigrant who was translated to McManus' lifetime in 27 languages, brought, according to McManus two years before his death his twelve million dollars a.

In 1914, McManus played himself in a guest appearance in the historically significant short film Gertie the Dinosaur . McManus died in 1954 at the age of 70 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx , New York.
