Harry A. Pollard
Harry A. Pollard (born January 23, 1879 in Republic City , Kansas - † July 6, 1934 in Pasadena , California ) was an American actor, director and screenwriter of the silent and early talkies era .
life and career
Pollard began his acting career in 1912 at Selig Studios . Among other things, he played in a 1913 film adaptation of the novel Onkel Toms Hütte . Since 1912 he has directed numerous short films and after 1916 concentrated completely on his work as a director. Under contract with Universal Pictures since the late 1920s , he shot another film adaptation of Uncle Tom's Cabin for the studio in 1927 . In 1929 he directed the expensive film adaptation of Show Boat based on the novel by Edna Ferber . Laura La Plante , Joseph Schildkraut and Alma Rubens took on important roles in the film, which was initially shot as a silent film. In the post-production several passages were stored with a sound track. In 1930 he switched to MGM , where, among other things, he was responsible for the Great Day disaster . The shooting of the film with Joan Crawford was completely stopped after a few weeks. In 1931 he ended his career with The Prodigal , an operetta with Lawrence Tibbett and Esther Ralston, and A Feller Needs a Friend , a comedy with Jackie Cooper .
Pollard was married to the actress Margarita Fischer from 1911 until his death . He died in 1934 at the age of 55 after a brief illness.
