Stephan Lück (church musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephan Lück (born January 9, 1806 in Linz am Rhein , † November 3, 1883 in Trier ) was a German theologian, church musician and editor.

After studying Catholic theology in Bonn and Trier, Lück was ordained a priest on September 20, 1828; and then worked as a chaplain in Kreuznach and pastor of Waldalgesheim .

In 1835 Bishop Josef von Hommer appointed him professor for moral theology at the Episcopal Seminary in Trier, where he taught this subject until 1849 and also lectured on church music .

On January 27, 1848, Lück was appointed cathedral music director of the Trier cathedral , which meant that he was responsible for both the cathedral music and the cathedral music school; he held this office until the end of July 1853. On February 11, 1849, Bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi also appointed him cathedral capitular and cathedral monastery , and in 1868 also cathedral priest.

The publication of the first Trier diocesan hymn book in 1846, which became the model for most of the German-language diocesan chant books of the following years, was carried out by Stephan Lück.

He also wrote a "theoretical-practical guide to the production of a worthy church chant", in which he primarily devoted himself to the development and training of church choirs.

On various trips to libraries and archives at home and abroad he had already collected performance materials of works of the old classical vocal polyphony and brought them to Trier, which he then made available to the public in his "Collection of Excellent Compositions for the Church"; This collection became very important as a standard work on sacred music of the 16th and 17th centuries, alongside the "Musica Divina" by Carl Proske, who was his friend, and was widely distributed. The 2nd, extended edition of this work was made by Michael Hermesdorff , who also died before the editing work was completed, which is why the still outstanding 4th volume was published by Heinrich Oberhoffer .
