Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale

The Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale (CLN, "Committee of National Liberation") was founded in Rome on September 9, 1943 - one day after Italy's armistice with the (Western) Allies.

It was a political body of the resistance movement in southern and central Italy against Italian fascism . In the north the partisan groups united to form the CLNAI (CLN Northern Italy), which initially acted independently of the CLN.

PCI , PSI , Pd'A , DC , PDL and PLI came together in the CLN .

The association saw itself as a provisional government that was to exist until the liberation of Italy. In the eyes of the six parties, the Badoglio government and the royal family had delegitimized themselves through their flight.

After the “turn of Salerno”, however, the CLN joined the Badoglio cabinet. The PCI under Palmiro Togliatti played a particularly large part in this. One of the conditions was the immediate resignation of King Victor Emmanuel III. which was initially to mean the end of the monarchy. In order to accommodate the royalists, his less “burdened” son Umberto II was made his successor and a referendum on the new form of government “post-war Italy” was agreed. In this referendum, the parliamentary republic was given preference over the constitutional monarchy.
