Career

The goalkeeper had played for SpVgg Radevormwald before he was discovered and then moved to Bayer Leverkusen (1968–1973) and RW Oberhausen (1973–1975) in the former Regionalliga West . With RW Oberhausen he rose to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1974 and back down again in the following season. Thereupon also moved to the second division club 1. FC Saarbrücken , with whom he rose to the Bundesliga in 1976. The Saarlanders were able to hold the class for two years. In this phase also played twice for the B national team . He stayed in Saarbrücken for two more seasons. In the 1980/81 season he played for the second division promoted 1. FC Bocholt , with whom he reached a place in the middle of the table.

After that, he moved to the United States for the Chicago Sting , where the championship competition was already in progress. In 1981 he and his German team-mates Karl-Heinz Granitza , Arno Steffenhagen , Paul Hahn and Ingo Peter won the NASL 2-1 victory in the shootout over New York Cosmos . In the shootout, he fended off three out of five balls. In 1983 he returned to Germany to the second division promoted Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . In the 1983/84 season, in which RW Oberhausen just managed to keep the class, it was only used three times.

In his later coaching days he worked for ten years as a trainer for the amateur and youth teams of 1. FC Saarbrücken and took over the coaching position for the Saarland league club SC Friedrichsthal for the 2007/08 season. On June 3rd, 2008 Dieter Ferner signed another contract with the first division club 1. FC Saarbrücken, with which he won the championship title and thus qualification for the regional league in the first season. On May 8, 2010, he and his team made it through to the third league as first in the Regional League West . On May 26, 2010 it was announced that Dieter Ferner would no longer be the head coach of FC Saarbrücken from July 2010. He switched to the position of sports director because he did not have a coaching license for the 3rd division.

From July 1, 2012, Dieter Ferner worked as a trainer again at Borussia Neunkirchen in the Oberliga Südwest. After the 4-0 home defeat on April 19, 2014 against SV Alemannia Waldalgesheim , also resigned from his coaching position. In December 2014 he became the coach of SC Friedrichsthal , and six months later he took over the post of sporting director.
