The old building of the district court on the judicial island was inaugurated in October 1908 after more than two years of construction, at that time still as district court Elberfeld . In 1964 a seventeen-storey high-rise justice building was added, which, however, had to be demolished again in 2001 due to fire protection deficiencies that made a corresponding renovation uneconomical compared to a new building. A new building was erected at this point, which was put into operation in 2005. The new building is used by both the regional and local court in Wuppertal. Negotiations in criminal and civil law proceedings take place here and in the old building.
