Justice tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Justice Tower was an administration building in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . The building on Judgment Island was the second tallest in the city and dominated the skyline of the Elberfeld center.

Description and outline

In addition to the building erected 1848-1853 District Court , the built in 1900 is located District Court on the Wupper island. Behind the district court on the western end was the 17-story high-rise justice (according to another source, 18-story - the count probably results from the fact that the ground floor was added to the 17 floors of the building). There other business premises of the local court and the public prosecutor's office were housed and connected to the old building of the local court by an above-ground corridor. This gang was jokingly called the "civil servant career". The skyscraper was built in 1964 and was 65 meters high (according to another source it was built in 1961 - but this is probably the start of construction) (according to another source a height of 72 meters is described - the ground floor is probably 65 meters here high building volume has been added).

In the 1990s, local politicians described the building as a "blot" in the ensemble of buildings of the regional court and district court, which are protected as a historical building . As one of the first high-rise buildings in the valley, there were also considerations to put this building under monument protection . However, the building had to be demolished due to serious structural and fire protection deficiencies. The abundant wood built into the walls violated fire protection regulations. The ceiling cladding and built-in cables would also have had to be replaced as a result. Since parts of the building were also exposed to asbestos , it was decided to build a new one.

The demolition of the skyscraper, which was cleared on March 17, 1998, in March to June 2002 posed a particular challenge to the companies involved. The surrounding buildings, including a kindergarten, were not allowed to be impaired. Blasting was ruled out entirely because of the neighboring suspension railway . The location on the river island in the immediate vicinity of the busy federal highway 7 and the Hofkamp didn't make it any easier. The building consisted of an interior core with an elevator shaft and staircase and four floors suspended from four 1.0 x 0.6 meter pylons on the outside. They wanted to demolish the building in two phases, cut the top ten floors with diamond sawing technology and tear down the bottom seven floors with a rope excavator. It only took around four days to dismantle each floor; six days were planned for this in the planning. The top ten floors were cut into 510 individual parts.

The justice tower was replaced by a new building according to the plans of the Düsseldorf architectural office HPP. The so-called Justice Center Wuppertal was completed in spring 2005 after a two-year construction period. The investment in the six-storey building with a usable area of 9,500 square meters amounted to 30 million euros. In the presence of NRW - Justice Minister Roswitha Müller-Piepenkötter the new building was inaugurated on August 31 of 2005.
