Markus Schuler (born August 1, 1977 in Löffingen ) is a former German soccer player . He played for Hannover 96 and Arminia Bielefeld 182 Bundesliga games.

Career

He began his career at SV Feldberg, where he was active until 1994. He then moved to FC Löffingen and then played for FC Neustadt for one season in 1996. In the 1997/98 season he then laced up his shoes for FV Donaueschingen, where he was spotted and signed by the second division club SC Fortuna Köln . After the relegation of Fortuna, in which Schuler was rarely in the starting eleven, the left winger moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2000 , where he quickly had a regular place and was retrained from offensive player to full-back - a role that he continued to interpret comparatively offensively . After the Mainz team missed their promotion in May 2002, Schuler made use of his release clause and moved to Hannover 96 , who had been promoted to the Bundesliga . After two years he left Lower Saxony, which also used him only irregularly, and signed with Arminia Bielefeld and prevailed there on the left side of defense against national player Tobias Rau . Due to several cases of “lack of discipline” he was given a “pause for thought” at the end of the 2005/06 season. In January 2007 he extended his expiring contract for another three years until 2010. After the retirement of the former captain Rüdiger Kauf in the 2011/12 season, Markus Schuler was appointed the new captain.

Schuler left the DSC after the 2011/12 season. The Bielefeld would have liked to keep him as an assistant coach, but Schuler wanted to return to his home in Baden-Württemberg for family reasons.

In his second division appearances at Fortuna Cologne and 1. FSV Mainz 05, Schuler scored three goals, including the decisive 3-1 for Fortuna in the city duel against 1. FC Cologne on April 9, 2000. Scored in the 2001/02 season he equalized to 1: 1 against promotion competitor and his later club Hannover 96. On the 14th matchday of this season, Schuler received his only expulsion from professional football so far: in the 90th minute of the game against Arminia Bielefeld, he received a yellow-red card for repeated foul play. In the following two seasons at Hanover, the left-back failed to score, but made five assists.

During his time at DSC Arminia, Schuler concentrated on the defender position. Nevertheless, he has managed two assists so far: In the 2005/06 season, he initiated the turnaround on matchday 17 with his preparatory work to make it 2-1 (final score 3-1) against 1. FC Köln. In the 2006/07 season, Schuler initiated the preliminary decision to 3: 1 (final score 5: 1) against Alemannia Aachen in a decisive game to stay up.

Until 2017, Schuler was the most unsuccessful field player in Bundesliga history in terms of goals scored. By the end of the 2008/09 season , Schuler had played 182 Bundesliga games without ever having scored. On the 2nd match day of the 2017/18 season , Dennis Diekmeier replaced him as the record holder.

He is married and has two children. After his active football career, he works at the Sparkasse Ortenaukreis .
