Christian Mathenia (born March 31, 1992 in Mainz ) is a German soccer goalkeeper . He is under contract with 1. FC Nürnberg .

Career

Mathenia began playing football at VfL Frei-Weinheim , a district club in Ingelheim am Rhein , and switched to the youth department of 1. FSV Mainz 05 via Hassia Bingen in 2006 . For the U23 youth team, he played 51 regional league games. In the club's internal competition for the goalkeeper place in the Bundesliga team 2013/14 , Loris Karius was given preference over Mathenia.

For the 2014/15 season Mathenia moved to second division SV Darmstadt 98 , with whom he rose to second place in the Bundesliga at the end of the season and was the only player to play all 34 second division games (over 90 minutes). He also remained SVD's regular goalkeeper in the Bundesliga.

For the 2016/17 season he moved to Hamburger SV . He signed a contract that ran until summer 2019. On the 11th matchday on November 20, 2016, he made his debut against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2-2). After René Adler's contract expired at the end of the season, HSV signed a new goalkeeper in Julian Pollersbeck . With this Mathenia competes for the position in the gate. Shortly before the start of the season, HSV coach Markus Gisdol announced that Mathenia was going into the 2017/18 season as a regular goalkeeper . For the second half of the season he had to give up this place to Pollersbeck, but got it back from the new coach Bernd Hollerbach after the first two games . After Christian Titz, the third coach, had taken over the team this season, Pollersbeck became the goalkeeper again from matchday 27.

After HSV was relegated, Mathenia moved to Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Nürnberg for the 2018/19 season . From the eighth day of the match he replaced Fabian Bredlow as regular goalkeeper until the end of the season and only missed five more games due to an injury. With the Franks, he was relegated to the bottom of the table in the 2nd division and then extended his contract term to June 2024. On the 9th match day of the following second division season 2019/20 , the goalkeeper broke his kneecap against FC St. Pauli while clearing an attack needed an operation. After three months he was back between the posts in a test match.
