He made his Bundesliga debut on February 24, 2013 (23rd matchday) in the home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the starting line-up.
1. FSV Mainz 05
After the Fürth was relegated to the 2nd division, Geis moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 for a transfer fee of 900,000 euros in the 2013/14 season . He signed a contract for four years until June 30, 2017. Here Geis developed into a regular player in the defensive midfield of Mainz.
FC Schalke 04
For the 2015/16 season , Geis moved to FC Schalke 04 for a transfer fee of more than 10 million euros and received a contract that ran until 2019. Under coach André Breitenreiter in the starting line-up from the beginning of the season, he received the red card on matchday 10 after a foul on André Hahn in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach and was suspended for five games in the Bundesliga and in the DFB-Pokal. On December 4, 2015, the 15th matchday, Geis returned to the team in the game against Hannover 96 and scored his first league goal for Schalke. In the first half of the season he came to 13 games, in which he marked a hit and he prepared four more. Since his suspension in the Europa League did not take effect, he was used in all six possible group games. He scored one goal and gave two assists. In the following season 2016/17 he was only used sporadically by coach Markus Weinzierl in the second half of the season.

In August 2013 he was appointed to the German U-21 national team for the first time . With her he took part in the U-21 European Championship in 2015 and came to two missions, but never for the full game.
Style of play
Geis prefers to play in the central defensive midfield. He fills gaps in his own defense, wins balls and then distributes them in his own ranks. Experts praised him in 2015 for "his unusual serenity on the ball. As a clearer in front of the defense, Geis would convince with a ripped off style of play, a strong overview and consistency." He is characterized by high, but accurate passes to the top. So he prepares many goal area scenes. During his time in Mainz he was considered a good free-kick taker.
