TEDi (formerly T € Di ) is a German non-food retailer with 2100 (as of March 2019) branches in Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Croatia, Italy and Poland. The range includes everyday items and consumables. In addition to household, party, do-it-yourself and electrical goods, it also includes stationery and toys as well as drugstore and cosmetic products. There are also seasonal items. Branded goods are increasingly found both in the permanent range and among the trend items.

TEDi was launched by the Tengelmann Group with the idea of offering the concept of one-dollar shops in Germany as well. The company was founded as an offshoot of the Tengelmann textile subsidiary KiK . As a minority shareholder, Tengelmann holds 30 percent of the shares.

Company history

TEDi opened the first branch in Hagen in August 2003 . TEDi GmbH & Co. KG was entered in the commercial register on September 25, 2004 . As a result, the company tried to open as many branches as possible as quickly as possible.

Three years later, in May 2007, the 500th branch was opened. In May 2010 the 1,000th TEDi branch opened in Moordorf, East Frisia . The company is planning 200 new openings per year across Europe and is aiming for 5,000 branches in the medium term. The number of branches is currently around 2100 (as of March 2019). According to the company, this makes it the market leader in the field of non-food discounters.

On May 2, 2011, the company expanded to Austria with a branch in Graz . Others followed. On June 6, 2012, TEDi expanded to Slovenia with a branch in Murska Sobota and promised around 12–15 new branches there per year. The company continues its expansion in Europe with Slovakia (2013), Spain (2015) and Croatia (2017). Further foreign markets were opened in Italy and Poland in 2018.

TEDi branches are preferably set up in the vicinity of other Tengelmann Group shops and large retail chains. An important target group is the walk-in customers who come by "by chance" and are "held up" by stands in front of the building. Therefore, many branches are located in shopping malls and small town centers.

From 2013 to 2018, the stores were rebuilt according to a new branch concept, with which the branch network was modernized across the board. The branches were given, among other things, flooring with a wood look, LED ceiling lighting and clearer shelf elements.

TEDi also had an online shop since 2013. This was closed on March 31, 2019.

In 2016, TEDi and the low- cost chain Black.de placed around 50 branches on the German discounter market under the motto "Black trade for everyone". 1,000 branches were planned nationwide. A year later, the parent company announced the end of Black.de, the branch should be closed and "reflagged" in TEDi branches.

On December 27, 2017, TEDi announced the takeover of 63 branches of the Dutch retail chain Xenos in Germany. This came into force on January 27, 2018. The conversion of the branches to TEDi branches took place successively, the transaction included all existing employment contracts.

sustainability

More than half of the TEDi paper range has an “FSC” or “The Blue Angel” seal of approval. TEDi relies on renewable energies for the power supply. 98 percent of the branches are supplied with certified green electricity from renewable energy sources. Since 2011, the company headquarters and logistics in Dortmund have also been using “green” electricity, which is produced in a CO 2 -neutral manner.

In 2013, TEDi also built a photovoltaic self-consumption system. The photovoltaic system, about two soccer fields in size, is located on two roofs of the company headquarters in Dortmund and produces around 870,000 kilowatt hours annually.

In March 2016, TEDi removed plastic bags from the range of German branches and replaced them with bags made of fabric or recycled material. In the foreign subsidiaries, the plastic bags were removed at the end of 2017, in Spain at the end of 2018.

In addition, TEDi has been supporting the non-profit foundation help and hope since 2007 , which initiates social projects to help children in need.

TEDi has been participating in the "FamUnDo" (family-conscious company in Dortmund) project since 2009 and has twice been recognized as a family-friendly company. In addition, there has been a large day care center on the premises of the European headquarters in Dortmund-Brackel since 2017, where children between the ages of 3 months and 3 years are looked after.

Sponsorship

At the beginning of the 2017/2018 football season, TEDi became the new sleeve sponsor for the first division club Hertha BSC . For the company, this was the first commitment of this magnitude in football sponsorship. For the 2018/2019 football season, TEDi expanded its involvement with Hertha BSC and has been the main sponsor ever since. In this way, the nationwide awareness of the company is to be increased.

The non-food retailer has been a partner of the Talentwerk and the VfL Bochum football school since the 2016/2017 season . As part of this partnership, TEDi is represented, among other things, with its logo on the jersey sleeves of the U19 and U17 players of Talentwerk players and on the sleeves of the football school's jerseys.

TEDi has been a product partner of Borussia Dortmund since 2011 .

Furthermore, TEDi was the main sponsor of the third division club VfL Osnabrück during the 2017/2018 season .

In October 2017, TEDi ran the first TV advertisement. Four different short films were broadcast on German television, plus an online spot that went viral.

criticism

In October 2011, Ver.di criticized the employees' low wages. Even trained staff with an IHK degree should only have received a gross wage of 7 euros per hour.

Another point of criticism is the quality of the articles mostly imported from China . Frequent complaints from the Rapid Exchange of Information System (RAPEX) of the EU regarding harmful ingredients (e.g. phthalates ), especially in toys, are the result, for example in March 2009 of a set of 3 plastic dolls.

The TEDi prices are also repeatedly criticized. The prices from 1 euro suggest a low price level. But occasionally the articles are much cheaper at other retailers.

Employees complain of high work pressure, long working days and a lot of overtime.
