Isaac Kiese Thelin (born June 24, 1992 in Örebro ) is a Swedish football player . The offensive player, who made his debut in the Swedish senior team in 2014 , has won the Swedish and Belgian championship titles in his career to date and was U-21 European champion in 2017.

Career

Debut and breakthrough in Sweden

Kiese Thelin, son of a father from the DR Congo and a Swedish mother, started playing football at Karlslunds IF . In 2009 he made his debut for the club in the third division Division 1 and came to six appearances during the season, but rose with the team at the end of the season. Although he established himself as a regular player in the fourth division and became a regular goal scorer, he again missed relegation and was passed through to fifth division with the club. After he was able to shine as a goalscorer several times there, he moved to the first division club IFK Norrköping during the 2011 season .

However, Kiese Thelin did not make his debut in the Allsvenskan until the 2012 season, when he replaced Astrit Ajdarević in the final minutes of the 2-1 away win at IFK Göteborg in April of that year . It was only towards the end of the season that he was used more regularly, but remained primarily a supplementary player. In the second half of the following season he sat down as a regular in the attacking midfield, at the end of the season he finished ninth on the side of Martin Smedberg , Morten Skjønsberg , Christoffer Nyman and Mathias Florén . Also at the beginning of the 2014 season regular player in his club, U-21 selection coach Håkan Ericson nominated him for the Swedish U-21 national team . On his debut in June of that year he scored alongside Malkolm Moenza one of the goals for the 2-0 win over the Icelandic junior selection .

Shortly before his junior national team debut, Kiese Thelin announced his move within Allsvenskan to the reigning champions Malmö FF , which he was to join for four years from December 2014. Just a month later, the two clubs agreed on an immediate transfer. After his debut in qualifying for the 2014/15 Champions League against FK Ventspils in a 0-0 home draw, he scored his first competitive goal in his league debut for the Malmö club and was match winner in the 1-0 away win in the second leg in Lithuania with the game-winning goal . Ultimately, he qualified with the team for the group stage of the Champions League. While the team was eliminated from the competition there as the bottom of the group, they won the Swedish championship title at the end of the season. A week after the end of the season, Kiese Thelin also contributed to the second title win of the year when he forced extra time with his goal to equalize 1-1 in the 90th minute of the game for the Swedish Supercup against cup winners IF Elfsborg and then with the club in Penalty shootout triumphed.

Already in October 2014, Kiese Thelin and Oscar Lewicki played a decisive role in the qualification of the U-21 national team for the U-21 European Championship 2015 , when the two of them defeated the French national junior team after a 2-0 draw in the second leg of the play-offs - Front-end defeat with two goals each contributed to the 4-1 success. In November he finally celebrated his debut in the Swedish national team as part of qualifying for the European Championship 2016 . National coach Erik Hamrén replaced him in the 1-1 draw against Montenegro in the 86th minute for Erkan Zengin to strengthen the offensive.

U-21 European champions and years of traveling abroad

On January 22, 2015 Kiese Thelin moved to the French first division club Girondins Bordeaux and signed a contract until June 30, 2019. His league debut he played shortly afterwards on January 24, 2015 against SC Bastia . By the summer he was one of the players regularly used by coach Willy Sagnol and played 15 of the 17 league games by the end of the season.

In the U-21 European Championship finals, which were ultimately successful, Kiese Thelin was a regular player and played all five final round games. His only tournament goal in the 2-1 victory over Italy in the Scandinavians' first tournament game with a penalty shortly before the end of the game to the final score should be significant for the rest of the tournament, as after a 0-1 defeat against England and a 1-1 draw against Portugal against the now equal points, the direct comparison in favor of the Swedes failed and they - despite a worse goal difference - advanced to the semi-finals as second in the group. After a 4-1 win over Denmark there they met again with Portugal in the final, which was decided after a goalless 120 minutes on penalties . Here Kiese Thelin was again a sure shooter from the penalty spot, the Swedish goalkeeper Patrik Carlgren ultimately became a hero with two penalties saved and the title of U-21 European champion went to Sweden for the first time 23 years after the only final participation to date in 1992 .

The season after his return to Girondins Bordeaux was overshadowed by minor injuries, so that he was ousted from the starting lineup by the young academy players Adam Ounas and Enzo Crivelli and only made seven championship games during the entire season under Sagnol and his successor Ulrich Ramé . Despite a renewed trainer change to Jocelyn Gourvennec in the summer of 2016 he did not come on the status of a supplementary player out, especially as he is behind the from AC Milan committed Jérémy Ménez had to classify. By the turn of the year he played seven games in Ligue 1, scoring two goals.

In January 2017, Kiese Thelin moved on loan to the Belgian club RSC Anderlecht , who agreed a purchase option with Girondins. In the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League he advanced to the match winner for the Western Europeans in the round of 32 against Zenit Saint Petersburg . After a 2-0 first leg win, the team was already 3-0 down in the second leg away, before he scored in the final minute to make the final score 1: 3 and thus promotion to the round of 16 due to the away goals rule . Until the elimination against the eventual title holder Manchester United in the quarter-finals, who won after two 1-1 draws only with a goal from Marcus Rashford in extra time at Old Trafford , he played all six possible European Cup games. In addition, he was also a regular player in the championship and contributed to winning the championship with 16 games in regular time and in the championship finals. In August, the club pulled the purchase option and agreed a five-year contract, but loaned the player directly to league competitor Waasland-Beveren . With 16 goals in regular time, he was the best shooter tied with Teddy Chevalier , was one of the guarantors of relegation. In the play-off games for the Europa League he scored three more goals, placing him in third place on the top scorer list behind Chevalier and top scorer Hamdi Harbaoui , who had scored a total of 22 goals this season.

Due to the successes in Belgium, Kiese Thelin stayed with the national team. In summer 2018, selection coach Janne Andersson nominated him for the 2018 World Cup . The team failed in the quarter-finals to England , each as a substitute he was used in four final round matches.

For the 2018/19 season , Kiese Thelin was loaned to the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In total, he came to 14 competitive games for Leverkusen, in which he scored a goal. After the end of the season, Kiese Thelin returned to Anderlecht.

In the 2019/20 season he played there from 21 league games until the winter break in ten games; only for one game over the full duration. At the beginning of January 2020, a loan to Malmö FF was agreed until the end of the year. That corresponds to the season of the Swedish league.
