Castanopsis calathiformis is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible.

Castanopsis calathiformis is a tree . The leaves are sawn. The petiole does not have a gland.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with thin, roof-tile-like scales. These are most pointed and upright. The fruit cups are egg-shaped or slightly compressed, they enclose up to half of the only nut. The rachis of the fruit is at least 15 centimeters long.

Flowering time is January to May, mostly April to May. The fruit ripens between April and December, mostly from July to October.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , Yunnan , Laos and Vietnam . It grows in damp, higher-lying mixed deciduous forests, in evergreen hill forests as well as in deeper and higher mountain forests at 700 to 2000 m altitude, mostly at 1800 to 2000 m.
