action

Hervé Chabalier is the owner of a Paris press agency and has been an alcoholic for years . Now he goes to La Roselière rehab for five weeks to get rid of the addiction. He shares the room with Pierre, who has already been treated for a few weeks and keeps joking about everyone's situation. Hervé and Pierre are in turn part of a therapy group who take part in therapy sessions together and also spend their free time together. If Hervé initially takes part in the meetings in silence and takes note of some of the rituals in a strange way, he soon accepts his dependence on alcohol. He learns to subordinate himself to the group and also to subordinate himself.

One day the young Magali joins the group. Hervé cannot believe or understand that at 23 she is actually an alcoholic. When everyone in a therapy session is asked to tell a partner their worst, alcohol-related moments, Magali pretends to tell him a story of lies in front of Hervé, about a drunk night, sex with an old man and the sobering up in a police cell. Hervé has to repeat the story in front of the group, she tells them motionlessly and says that it is nonsense. Magali accuses him of not knowing her at all and angrily hurries away. A little later, the two get along because Magali has found a young kitten that she wants to look after. He helps her with it.

Hervé survived the first few days well and is released from quarantine. He can now walk in the park, receive mail and make phone calls. One day, Pierre went missing and was found drunk in a restaurant. Before Hervé, he admits that he probably won't be able to make it. Hervé, in turn, receives a visit from his wife, who, in the presence of the therapists, makes it clear to him that she was at the end of her strength and that he has destroyed her life and that of their son Thomas - they are better off without him. Thomas has not spoken to Hervé for a year and also refused to visit him in the institution.

One day, Hervé finds Magali crying. The kitten died and they are burying it. Magali makes it clear that she wants to sleep with Hervé. When he agrees, she sends him off. Therapy sessions follow. Hervé talks about his life and about his father's funeral, which he used to empty his wine cellar and fall to the ground in front of the mourners. Thomas overcomes himself and visits his father. He asks direct questions, which Hervé answers honestly, even if he cannot answer the question why he had to drink. While talking, Hervé sees Magali leaving with a stranger. A little later he meets her drunk. The man had smuggled alcohol into the premises for her in a tube of toothpaste. Magali is kicked out of the institution. Shortly afterwards, Hervé also loses Pierre, with whom he had become friends: Pierre suddenly spits up blood at night and finally dies shortly afterwards in the hospital.

For the first time in three weeks, Hervé has 24 hours of free time. He goes alone to a restaurant that he actually wanted to visit with Pierre. He then makes an appointment with Magali in a disco. Magali, however, is drunk and crazy. When she briefly leaves him, he leaves without having accepted any drinks offered. After five weeks, Hervé is released. After some time, he sums up that some of his group members have relapsed, but others have managed to take off. He himself is dry, but Magali disappeared without a trace a short time after their last meeting.
