The Hell by Henri-Georges Clouzot (Original title: L'enfer d'Henri-Georges Clouzot ) is a French documentary directed by Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea from 2009 .

On the basis of archive and test recordings as well as interviews with members of the production staff, he examines the development and the ultimate failure of the film project L'Enfer (1964) by director Henri-Georges Clouzot .

action

In 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot's ambitious film project L'Enfer failed after the main actor in many of the scenes that had already been filmed, Serge Reggiani , had to be replaced and Clouzot suffered a heart attack shortly afterwards. At this point, Clouzot, known for his perfectionism and also with the reputation of being "difficult", had already exceeded the shooting schedule considerably.

Forty-five years later, Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea presented a documentary that (in addition to the scenes that had already been filmed and tests for color effects and visual effects) included interviews with members of the production staff and re-enacted key scenes.

background

The project began when Serge Bromberg met Inès de Gonzalez, Clouzot's second wife, in a stuck elevator. In the conversation it turned out that Clouzot had deeply regretted until the end of his life that he would not be able to complete the film, which he had intended to be his "absolute masterpiece", but that a lot of the material had been preserved.

The film was reconstructed under the direction of Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea. Clouzot's archive material, which consisted of 185 reels with a running time of around 15 hours, was processed. Interviews with nine members of the team from 1964, including actress Catherine Allégret , assistant director Costa-Gavras , camera assistant William Lubtchansky and kinetic artist Joël Stein , were added, as were Clouzot's precise production notes and test recordings. In addition,  missing key scenes were re-enacted with Bérénice Bejo and Jacques Gamblin (in the roles of Romy Schneider and Serge Reggiani).

As a tribute to the director and the leading actors, the film was screened out of competition on May 19, 2009 at the Cannes International Film Festival , later at the Toronto International Film Festival and at the festivals in New York , Vancouver and London . The film was enthusiastically received by the critics. Among other things, it won the César in the category Best Documentary and a special prize ("Legacy of Cinema Award") from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association .

In Germany , Henri-Georges Clouzot's Die Hölle was released on DVD in 2010 , and the film was first broadcast on television in 2011.

criticism

“With the help of the material that was shot at the time, which gives an exciting impression of Clouzot's 'unleashed' imagery, critically distant interviews and some re-enacted scenes, an intense impression of the visual and narrative power, but also the aesthetic radicalism of the unfinished work is conveyed. At the same time, it becomes clear what a self-exploitative show of strength the shooting was for everyone involved. Particularly impressive: Romy Schneider, who gave herself completely to the material and the camera. "

Awards (selection)
