The young graduate Megan Smith has to pay off the loans for her Yale education and ends up in a gossip sheet of all things, even though she would like to write serious books. But then she is fired by her boss, but she also gets a new career opportunity with an old friend, the Baker family. There Megan becomes a private tutor for the teenagers Rose and Sage and is supposed to make them fit for college. In return, she receives a fixed, high salary and, if successful, a check that covers the majority of her college credit.
But the would-be Hiltons don't think about concentrating on learning and prefer to become famous socialites. Therefore, the two who are like bad luck make Megan's life hell. Megan gets support from the house cook Marco Giordello, who knows the family and the problems. She is also flirted with by Marco's friend Will Davis. But Megan is hiding something from the family: She comes from the area and her estranged sister Lily and her childhood friend Charlie Hogan still live there. Over the course of the series, Megan and the sisters Rose and Sage get closer.

The station The CW officially took the series on June 24, 2008 in the program for autumn 2008. The series is based on the book How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls by Zoey Dean and should initially go on series under this name. However, the title at the Upfronts was changed to Surviving the Filthy Rich and later to Privileged . The series was produced by Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television .
On May 19, 2009 it was announced that the series would not get a second season.
